How Much Cash Should You Carry in Japan?
Japan is increasingly card-friendly, but a small cash buffer still prevents avoidable problems at local restaurants, ticket machines, shrines, markets, and rural stops.
Carry enough yen for one cash-heavy day plus an emergency transit or meal buffer, then replenish from a compatible ATM instead of carrying the entire trip budget. The right amount depends on group size, rural travel, lodging payments, and whether your cards work reliably overseas.
Build the cash buffer
- List known cash-only expenses for the next 24–48 hours.
- Add local transit, lockers, small meals, admission, and vending-machine spending.
- Add an emergency amount for a failed card or closed ATM.
- Multiply for the group only where one person will pay.
When to carry more
- Rural areas, small inns, local buses, markets, festivals, or mountain routes.
- A late arrival when ATM options may be limited.
- A lodging balance confirmed as cash-only.
- Several small purchases where cards are inconvenient.
ATM strategy
Check your bank's foreign transaction fee, withdrawal fee, daily limit, and international-use settings. Withdraw in yen and understand any currency-conversion prompt before accepting it. Keep at least two payment cards stored separately.
Avoid both extremes
Do not assume Japan is cash-only, and do not assume every small merchant accepts your preferred card or mobile wallet. A replenishable buffer is safer than carrying a large trip-long cash reserve.
